Due to increased development within The Macallan Estate, Glenrothes and Highland Park distilleries, an exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit a Project Engineer based at The Macallan Estate.  This role is responsible for the management and delivery of a wide range of multi-disciplined engineering projects, from initial design and authorisation through to procurement, installation and commissioning, with a strong focus on programme, budget and compliance.  Projects are delivered across the full range of operational activities at all distillation and warehousing sites across Edrington’s portfolio in Scotland. On occasion you will travel to our site in Orkney for 1-2 days approximately 6 times per year. 
  • Working with the Engineering Management team to successfully deliver our annual capital investment plans.
  • Provide engineering support for the capital investment programme, providing specialist advice, technical input and plant specifications as appropriate, working with all members of the engineering team to incorporate new equipment and systems as required.
  • Manage multi-discipline projects from conception to hand-over. This includes liaising with internal and external stakeholders, feasibility studies, technical specifications, project budget and cost control, project planning and reporting, site surveys and closure.
  • Manage construction activities and overseeing commissioning activities.
  • Manage obsolescence of electrical/ control equipment and systems to ensure business continuity.
  • Establish a close interface with the operations and events & experience teams (Distillery Operations, New Make Spirit Fillings, Mature Operations and Warehousing, Events & Experience, Brands & whisky makers) and technical teams (quality, liquid quality, H&S, environment) to ensure effective and safe delivery of projects and improvement activities.
  • Ensure accurate and up to date technical information and drawings (layout, P&ID, electrical, control) are aligned with projects and plant/ infrastructure modifications.
  • Ensure Edrington remain an industry leader in innovative process control and new technologies.
  • Support our sustainability strategy through implementation of best practice for energy efficiency and sustainable technologies and design.
  • Work with Engineering Manager (North) and wider Engineering management team to horizon scan for opportunities to leverage new technologies, improve quality, efficiency and resilience of current processes and ensure that we remain compliant with changes in legislation.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety and environmental standards.

To be successful in this role, you have expertise in managing projects from design through to delivery and the ability to oversee financial budgets effectively. A sound knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, such as IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH certifications, is crucial, along with an in-depth understanding of statutory requirements, including H&S (COMAH/DSEAR) and Environmental standards. Familiarity with working within ATEX areas or knowledge of DSEAR regulations, as well as an understanding of protection concepts for ATEX zones, is also essential. You have knowledge equivalent to BS 7671 Wiring Regulations (18th Edition) and a broad understanding of LV distribution systems, motor control centers, control panels, and electrical installation practices, with HV experience being an advantage. Competency in managing electrical drawings using AutoCAD or similar tools is required, along with experience in instrumentation such as level, flow, temperature, and pressure. Knowledge of various wiring systems (e.g., Asi, Ethernet IP, analogue loops) and IT wiring systems is also important. Additionally, the role demands excellent influencing and communication skills, as well as the ability to engage and collaborate with key stakeholders effectively. Proficiency in key business systems, such as Office 365, AutoCAD, and SAP, is essential to support the high level of PC literacy required for the role.

Highly desirable skills and experience include a background in distillation or process-related industries, proficiency in project management software such as MS Project, and awareness of High Voltage Electrical Systems. Additional qualifications, such as CompEx Ex01–Ex04 (Gas and Vapours), Ex05–Ex06 (Dust), and Ex12 (Application Design Engineer), are advantageous. Experience in engineering within an Upper Tier CoMAH site is also highly valued.
