Research Scientist
Overview

A Whisky Industry Research Scientist is a scientist with top-notch data analysis and report writing capabilities, who develops, validates, and/or improves analytical methods for the routine testing as well as development of methods for specific research projects and one-off investigations. The role involves monitoring the levels of compliance in the laboratory, and the provision of analytical expertise to support R&D and the implementation of innovative product and production process improvements.

Role Description

Main duties and responsibilities

A research scientist's work is almost entirely laboratory-based, with responsibilities that include:

  • Lead the planning and conducting of scientifically rigorous research projects. Including pilot plants where required that deliver project aims and objectives, with proposals for research funding / bids where applicable.
  • Manage the technical aspects of analytical methodology in QC including method development, continuous improvement, validation/qualification, and transfer into and out of QC.
  • Perform product / materials testing and analysis of samples in a timely and efficient manner to existing procedures and standards.
  • Operate research projects Lab Quality Management Systems whilst ensuring compliance with ISO 9001 quality standards and regulatory requirements (ISO, ICH etc.), GLP and safety regulations.
  • Write research papers, reports, reviews and summaries, and/or attend meetings present research progress, findings and outcomes.
  • Writing and reviewing of laboratory SOPs, laboratory reports and trending of data as required.
  • Keeping current with latest scientific and technical developments and associated analytical methodologies and actively apply new concepts as appropriate.
  • Evaluate new cutting-edge technologies for product analysis, focusing on fast efficient and reliable methodologies that can be implemented in the laboratory.
  • Record and lead investigations in relation to any non-conformances.
  • Identify and make recommendations for improvements to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Assist with and participate in troubleshooting quality/production issues.
  • Actively participate in Internal and external audits of different departments.
  • Ensuring a high level of laboratory housekeeping is maintained.
  • Build appropriate networks to carry out research and/or attend meetings presentations.

Qualifications & Experience Requirements

To become a Research Scientist you need to have a good degree (a 2.1 or above) in Chemistry, Physics, Analytical Science, or related Physical Science Disciplines. A relevant postgraduate qualification is also normally required with experience in data analytics. You must be able to:

  • Work meticulously in data gathering with robust mechanisms for research methodologies
  • Convey detailed information in an articulate and confident manner
  • Demonstrate significant practical experience in analytical science
  • Demonstrate experience in the design and handling of large and complex data sets
  • Demonstrate proven analytical skills, proficiency in computer related software for analytical research requirements and a practical knowledge of statistical data analysis
  • Have excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Be well organised, with a high degree of attention to detail, accuracy and outstanding administration skills
  • Knowledge of ICH guidelines in method validation.
