As Marketing manager, your job is to plan and deliver the best ways to promote your company’s products for highest return. You will use all of your expertise and creativity to make sure your company’s’ new products are launched successfully, and sales of current products are maintained and grown.

The job involves market research and coordinating all marketing and promotional activities for your range of products. This is a job where you will excel if you are creative and organised.
What might I be doing?
The exact duties will vary from company to company based on size most likely. But some of the most common marketing managers’ jobs are:
- Conducting market research and identifying possible promotional strategies and new market niches for your products
- Developing and delivering the marketing strategy on time and within the budget
- Leading and motivating a team of marketing assistants and executives
- Liaising with colleagues, customers and contractors to ensure all work proceeds effectively and smoothly
- Measuring and evaluating the success of campaigns and presenting results to senior management
- Continually developing new strategies for products and ensuring overall company objectives are met
What will be expected of me?
This is a demanding and complex role, and you will need to be extremely well-organised and creative. You will be able to understand consumer needs and buying behaviour, you are also a people person and a good manager with good communication.
Your insight, influencing, prioritisation and budget control skills will be exceptional as you draw promotional briefs, write materials for journals and online outlets and proof-read and sign off on work of others.
As a manager, you will be expected to be able to motivate your team to achieve optimal productivity for your company.
For this role you will spend your time working to a variety of deadlines, so you need to be able to handle and manage in pressurised situations. You will also need to be confident enough to sell new and often novel ideas to senior company management.
What can I expect?
Many marketing managers’ roles are office based and are the core hours of 9am to 5pm you should expect to spend a lot of time working outside of these hours and travelling to meet with customers, PR agencies etc.
As you near a deadline, your hours may increase dramatically, and evening and weekend work is to be expected. As a marketing manager you have high profile role with a great deal of responsibility
for company performance so you will need to be constantly in the spotlight. You will need to be able to cope with pressure as you work to make your strategy for a product succeed.
What about the pay?
Salaries are extremely variable with different company requirements but an experienced marketing manager with proven successful campaigns behind them will earn more than £35,000+ and with promotion it can increase to the likes of £50,000+ and marketing directors will typically earn in excess of £75,000.
What qualifications do I need to get in?
You will probably have a degree in subjects such as marketing and public relations, business, etc.
You will already be a marketing executive with multiple years of experience before progress onto Marketing manager and you should also bear in mind that for management level, employers will likely be interested in your experience and track record and industry knowledge rather than formal qualifications.
Courses that offer placement year are great option to gain experience and give you a head start in the job.
What about further training?
You may wish to further train yourself so there are various postgraduate degrees available on a part-time basis as an employee or full-time basis. There are several professional bodies that offer diplomas for example with the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) which can be done on a distance learning basis.
Many marketing experts hold membership of the CIM which is widely known and is a respected professional body.
