Business Intelligence Executive
Overview

Business Intelligence (BI) is a rapidly expanding discipline that enables businesses to make better decisions by showing present and historical data in the context of the overall business. The resultant insights can cover all aspects of the business including competitor benchmarking, customer behaviour, operational performance and more. By understanding the levers behind business performance organisations can predict success, spot market trends, discover issues or problems, and identify ways to improve efficiency, productivity and profitability.

Increasingly businesses have vast amounts of data. As a Business Intelligence Executive, you will collect / mine this data and analyse it, to identify trends and patterns that inform future business decision making. Your duties involve complex data modelling, designing data analysis methodologies, scenario modelling, opportunity assessment and compiling reports and recommendations to present to the business’ leadership team.

Role Description

You will need to have a deep understanding of data systems and their features and capabilities. And will be responsible for designing dashboards, reports and other data visualisations that provide insights into performance.

Working closely with key partners, departmental colleagues and other stakeholders you will gather requirements, understand business needs, identify risks and opportunities based upon your analysis of the data and regularly present your reviews, findings and recommendations / solutions.

Main duties and responsibilities

Business Intelligence Executives combine technical ability with business acumen to provide critical insights into forces that drive performance across all aspects of a business.  Typical duties and responsibilities include:

  • Fully understanding the data available in databases and applications.
  • Reviewing data collection processes and assessing the validity of the information stored
  • Working closely with IT teams to ensure that the data collection and storage systems are secure and robust.
  • Thought leadership position, serving as first point of contact for all questions related to data.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to identify areas of the business that could benefit from analysis.
  • Analyse complex data sets to identify trends and patterns that help the business make informed decisions.
  • Develops, codes and tests queries and reports against various databases based on user- requirements.
  • Analyse information from customers, channels, categories, consumers, and competitors, identifying opportunities for improvement and insights to support development of proposals and recommendations for business growth.
  • Assist in preparation for key supplier and internal meetings to better understand and/or explain business challenges.
  • Leveraging large amounts of data to explain complex business challenges, providing explanations and solutions in a concise, easily understood format.
  • Utilise multiple additional data sources such as Diver, Cognos, SalesNav, and other internal databases.
  • Applies comprehensive business knowledge and detailed understanding of database structure and capabilities to filter and guide business user requests.
  • Run workshops with business leaders and management to understand their requirements for reporting or dashboards.
  • Building dashboards, using multiple data sources and various software and reporting tools, creating reports and supporting users in understanding the insights they provide.
  • Develops the scope and design of reports and dashboards by working closely with the requestors.
  • Supports incoming data requests, captures user requirements and designs the functional specifications for analytical reports, dashboards or analysis.
  • Monitor the usage of new and existing dashboards and reports to see where improvements can be made.
  • Deliver insights that drive short-term and long-term business and brand plans.
  • Deliver ad hoc “deep dive” analysis needs when required to assist in reports and data for decisions.
  • Communicating and presenting insights to senior management and across the organisation.
  • Delivers and/or supports training to project teams and users on reporting tools, systems and functionality.
  • Develop and implement data governance policies and procedures to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
  • Understand the laws surrounding the collecting and processing of data and ensuring that all policies reflect current legislation.

Skills and experience

Business Intelligence Executives need to demonstrate a wide range of skills to provide the business with the most relevant data and practical advice. Typically these include:

  • A solid understanding of SQL and relational databases
  • Experience with Business Intelligence Visualization tools such as Power BI, Spotfire, Tableau, Qlik, etc.
  • Experience of working with tools such as Jira/Confluence
  • Experience and or familiarity with HTML, Java Script, CSS (preferred)
  • Expertise in computer programming, data mining and data visualisation techniques
  • Excellent mathematical skills, particularly in statistics, with the ability to analyse complex data and produce recommendations on identified trends
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A good understanding of the various types of performance analysis such as SWOT, PESTLE and enterprise analysis
  • Good strategic and critical thinking skills with the ability to think in the future, to anticipate trends and opportunities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to build strong interpersonal relationships, people management and influencing skills.
  • Ability to lead projects, budgets and timescales.

 

Qualifications Required

  • BS/BA degree in Marketing, Statistics or Finance; MBA Preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in analysis/planning and syndicated data analysis within a consumer products organization (Beverage / Alcohol preferred)
  • Must be a self-motivated individual who has the ability to identify issues/opportunities for improvement and be proactive in addressing them.
  • Intellectual curiosity, passion for problem-solving, a test-and-learn mentality and thrives in ambiguity.
  • Advanced proficiency in both Excel and PPT
