To participate in the provision of an efficient and accurate laboratory analytical service to all departments within the Company and to external third parties when required.
  • Skills & Experience:
    A proactive and conscientious Chemist with laboratory experience within a chemistry or microbiology based manufacturing industry. An awareness and knowledge in Analytical Equipment and Laboratory Facilities, with a drive to support peers.
     
    Technical Experience
     HND or Degree level qualification.
     Experience or equivalent by demonstrating ability to operate at similar level.
     Strong analytical and reasoning skills.
     Intermediate PC Skills - Formula and graphs in excel, import photographs in PowerPoint, high standard of document production and report writing.

     Organised with a high level of attention to detail.
     Confident, with the ability to gain trust and respect.
     Has the ability to work to tight timescales.
     Approachable, enthusiastic, proactive, resilient.

    Main Responsibilities:
    1. Ensuring that all aspects of laboratory activities are carried out in accordance with Company Health and Safety requirements, and in compliance with current legislation, maintaining a safe working environment for employees.
    2. Maintaining an awareness of the regulatory and Company standards that apply to the role such as H&S, COMAH, Environment, HMRC, FEMAS (food & feed safety), ISO9001. COMAH specific - Understand and act in accordance with the Site Emergency Response Plan in the event of an evacuation or major incident, and regularly participate in COMAH improvement activity.
    3. Collect, analyse and report results of analysis in an accurate and timely manner.
    4. Highlight to the Laboratory Team Leader/Quality Assurance Manager any unexpected or non-conforming results.
    5. Provide Laboratory cover when required.
    6. To organise and support the Sensory Evaluation Panel as required.
    7. Support and engage with main external customers and suppliers on quality.
    8. Participate and support the Manufacturing Team to identify areas of improvement such as cereal conversion and fermentation.
    9. Any other duties that may reasonably be required in line with your contractual role.

    • Founded in 1885, The North British Distillery Company Ltd (North British) is one of Scotland’s oldest and largest Scotch Whisky producers. We originally operated under the structure of a co-operative until 1993 and are now owned as a joint venture between Diageo plc and The Edrington Group.

      We are a distillation and maturation business selling grain spirit which is used as the base for blended Scotch Whisky by many well-known brands. The Distillery is based in Gorgie (Edinburgh) and this site is responsible for the production of new-make spirit, producing a by-product of animal feed, and energy via an Anaerobic Digestion plant. Our main Warehousing site is based in Muirhall (Addiewell, West Lothian), with 15 maturation warehouses and responsibility for bonding, storage and disgorging.
