There are many unconventional routes into the Scotch Whisky industry, and Matthew Farmer’s career shows just how varied those paths can be.
Now Assistant Distillery Manager at Glenturret Distillery, Matthew began his career at a particularly challenging time. Like many from the millennial generation, he left university, without actually graduating, into the 2008 recession with just a dream to establish himself on the career ladder. This led him initially into a career as a chef, before he discovered distilling somewhat unexpectedly along the way.
Since then, Matthew has built nearly 15 years of experience across a range of distilling roles in both Scotland and the United States. Over that time, he has witnessed significant change—not only within the Scotch Whisky industry, but also in the wider employment landscape.
As Matthew observes: “Sometimes it seems our industry is simultaneously admired and accused of being slow-moving and traditional, but change is constantly in the works.”
One of the most pressing areas of change he identifies is the industry’s drive towards net zero. In his view: “This is and will continue to be the biggest challenge we’re facing as an industry and probably a planet. It’s institutional, foundational work, and honestly the whisky production side of things is probably the least of all the changes we’ll see.”

Matthew is candid about the challenges he has faced throughout his career progression.
“I’ve been passed over for many more roles than I’ve received, failed a lot more than I’ve succeeded and generally exhausted myself in the process.”
Reflecting on the recruitment practices he encountered when starting out—characterised by online applications, automated screening, and limited personal interaction—he notes that many of these features remain today. However, one piece of advice he feels strongly about stands out. “Please write a cover letter.”

A defining feature of Matthew’s career has been his openness to developing new skills, even when they fall outside his immediate role.
He frequently finds himself working beyond his comfort zone, but sees this as a key driver of professional growth. These experiences have helped him develop self-sufficiency and strong problem-solving abilities, particularly under pressure.
He highlights an interesting parallel between practical and professional challenges—whether it is manually clearing a blocked mash tun or presenting to a room of highly experienced industry professionals. In both cases, resilience and adaptability are essential.
Playing the long game brings satisfaction
Matthew is an advocate for continuous upskilling and for recognising the importance of the long-term perspective in whisky production. The process of creating a finished product can take years, and he values the patience and commitment that this requires. The big benefit in the
Scotch Whisky industry, of course, is that you can take a bottle home. Matthew is keen to point out that he is working on his collection!
When asked for his most important piece of career advice, he offers a simple but memorable insight: “That gut feeling you have that something’s exciting, or right, or meant to be—or you’re just hungry and could really go for a sandwich? Listen to it.”
